Elaborate and subtle at the same time, the Muted Neutral Rug is special for the combination of soft geometric central patterns and a grand border pattern. The silk component contributes to a slight lustre, while a very dense knotting of wool gives a solid feel.

Handknotting is the most labour-intensive of all rugmaking processes. Working off a rug map, artisans tie individual knots to build up the rug’s design one row at a time. You can identify a handknotted rug by the individual, often uneven knots visible on the back of the rug, mirroring the pattern visible on the front.

Only one piece of this kind is created. Highly intricate, it is made by specially trained women weavers in their rural homes.

A 170x240 cm rug can take between 5 to 12 months depending on the design complexity. The quality of a hand-knotted rug is determined by the number of knots per square inch (KSPI). A higher KSPI requires greater skill on the part of the weaver and results in a higher quality rug.

This piece is made with 140 KSPI giving it a total of 1,562,400 knots made by hand, one at a time and it took 6 months to weave.
