Size & Style Guide

Rugs ground us. They define our space, add warmth and beauty, and feel good under our feet. Taking the time to measure your space will ensure that your rug is scaled correctly to your room. Sometimes it is hard to visualize the perfect rug for your space. Don’t worry - we’ll make it easy for you.

The first step is to measure the space your rug will be covering. One trick is to create a masking tape border on the floor that you are considering covering. This will give your eye a visual reference point and help you figure out the proper size. Then, using a tape measure, measure the border you created. Consider doors when measuring. You want to make sure your door can open and close over the rug.

Here are some other quick tips to help.

The Living Room

After browsing through Pinterest and countless magazines for home decorating inspiration, you might ask “Should my furniture be on or off the rug?"

Aim to have the front two legs of all the furniture on the rug. The rug creates an intimate conversation space.

If this is not possible, then make sure the rug at least spans the distance of the main couch or seating area.

Smaller rugs can be used just under the coffee table to define specific seating areas.

The Hallways

There is no rigid rule when it comes to hallways. As long as you have a bit of border all around, your hallway will look inviting.

If you need a baseline size to visualize, measure the size of the hallway and subtract 30 cm from the length and width. This will allow for a 15 cm border all around.

If you have a long hallway, consider using two runners laid end to end.

The Bedroom

When we wake up in the morning, we like to feel a soft inviting surface as we stand up to start a new day.

To have a luxurious feel, put a larger rug under the entire bed.

Another option in the bedroom is to configure the rugs in a traditional “bedside” rug layout. This features two rugs on either side of the bed and one rug at the foot of the bed. If you have two beds in the room, consider placing one rug between them.

The Balcony

For outdoor rugs, you can cover the entire balcony or leave a border of exposed floor. Make sure the furniture sits on top of the rug for a cozy feel.

Outdoor rugs are also great for covering up unsightly balcony flooring. It makes the patio feel like part of the entire home, giving an illusion of a larger space.

The Dining Room

The choice is clear: your tables and chairs should all rest on the rug.

When purchasing a rug for a dining table, make sure to first measure the table's length and width, then add about 60 cm to each measurement. This will avoid chairs going off the rug when pushed back.

The Kitchen

Rugs that extend the length of the kitchen are a great way to add padding underfoot and fill up the space.

Another way is to cover the central area to create a point of interest.
