African Canister

Made from the horn of the ankole or the "Cattle of Kings", an indigenous breed of cow in Uganda and a stable source of food for the people. While the horn pieces are usually discarded, artisans have now found a way to use them to support local communities, and to create something truly beautiful.

The ankole are known for their exotically magnificent horns, versatility, exquisite colour variation, and stark, organic beauty. Horns are directly sourced from the cattle keepers in Uganda and handcrafted by artisans and metal smiths in Kenya.

The DNA of every horn is different, thus every piece made for you is unique.

Dimensions vary slightly but the average diameter is 10 cm.

Product Details & Care:

Because of the nature of natural horn, which is made up of keratin protein, there are special considerations for its proper care. If needed, wipe clean with a soft cloth. With kitchenware please clean after use using only lukewarm water. It should not be placed in a dishwasher. If immersed in water for too long, they could potentially give off a sulphur smell, which should dissipate once they are dry and over time with use. It is important to avoid leaving your horn items near heat sources or in direct sunlight, as warm temperatures can cause the horn to dry out or change shape.

Brass: Over time, the pure brass will develop a unique patina. If you prefer to maintain the sheen of the brass, a brass polish may be used, or simply clean with lemon juice or soapy water to maintain appearance and dry with soft cloth.
